(Las Vegas, NV) - NBA free agent
Brian Cook announced a Las Vegas location for his Stop Diabetes Hoop Festival
and Health Fair.
The basketball camp and tournament for all ages
will take place September 14 -16 at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730
South Rancho.
“There is great passion for basketball here in
Las Vegas,” noted Brian Cook Foundation (BCF) Executive Director Johnnie
Mathews. “The city is also a very central location to draw from other
Western states as well, so it makes logical sense for this to be a host site.”
The camp portion of the festival is open for
boys and girls ages 4 – 17 years old and costs $25 per person. Cook will
teach ball handling, passing, defensive and rebounding drills alongside his
coaching staff.
The tournament component is comprised of age
divisions ranging from Nine & Under through Adults. It is a
double-elimination tournament with championship play for $250 per team.
Because diabetes is the fastest growing disease
in the US, BCF designated the American Diabetes Association as an event
beneficiary. There is a health fair with screenings available to
participating groups and the public during registration and check in on
Friday.
“One in three children will develop diabetes if
current trends continue,” Tracie Patten, ADA Nevada Market Manager said.
“The statistic is one in two if African American, Asian or Hispanic. So
encouraging young people to stay active and providing access to free health
checks for the family does so much to prevent diabetes. It’s an awesome
event for Las Vegans.”
The Hoop Festival closes on Sunday with a Slam Dunk
Contest.
