Bulldogs & Hawks Earn Metro Crowns

The Albuquerque High boys and Volcano Vista girls basketball teams took home the trophies from the Albuquerque Metro Championships on Saturday night at La Cueva.

It was the first metro title for the Hawks and the first in 14 years for the Bulldogs.

ALBUQUERQUE HIGH 63, LA CUEVA 61: The Bears’ Bryce Alford fired off a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that clanged off the rim, enabling the Bulldogs to escape with a dramatic win.

“It’s huge for our community and it’s huge for our school,” said AHS coach Ron Garcia. “It’s been 14 years since we won this. It’s been long overdue.”

AHS (5-0) built a 59-49 lead in the fourth quarter, but La Cueva (4-1) had one last comeback left before anyone could breathe a sigh of relief.

After a Bears timeout and an offensive foul by AHS, Alford went to work, nailing a 3-pointer from NBA range.

Justin Griego followed with a layup to make it 59-54 with 1:22 remaining. Martin Romero was fouled but missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving La Cueva the ball back.

Jordan Clark put back a missed 3-pointer to cut the deficit to just three points. The Bears promptly fouled Romero again and this time he made one of two free throws.

Alford got the ball and went to look for another 3, but he settled for a layup on a drive to the basket to make it 60-58. Romero was then fouled again; he sank both free throws to give the Bulldogs some breathing room with 15.5 seconds left.

Showing no mercy, Alford responded with another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one with 8.3 seconds to go.

“We just knew we had to hang in there,” Garcia said. “We missed some free throws that could have iced the game. They made some tough shots.”

Malik Sims was then fouled with 5.7 seconds remaining. He made one of two free throws.

The Bulldogs knew the inbounds play was going to Alford, so Xavier Ayers charged out to meet him, briefly swatting the ball away before Alford recovered it and fired off the final shot from halfcourt.

“It just shows how much we love each other, how much we’ll do anything for each other, how much of a team we are,” said Romero, who scored a game-high 21 points.

VOLCANO VISTA 56, SANDIA 33: The Hawks forced a staggering 24 turnovers to overwhelm the Matadors (4-1), who forced only four turnovers.

“I’ve got to really credit our defense,” said Volcano Vista coach Lisa Villareal. “They just keep improving as a team every day. That’s what our expectation is and they’re really buying into it.”

Sandia’s last gasp came on Astrea Reed’s 3-pointer to start the second half, drawing the Matadors within 28-22. They would never get closer.

“They totally outworked us from beginning to end,” said Sandia coach Susan Kubala. “They were more aggressive. They took control of the game.”

The Hawks (5-0) built their lead with a series of runs, including a 13-2 burst to end the first quarter, an 11-2 explosion after Reed’s 3 in the third and a 14-2 coup de grace that began late in the third and ended with Volcano Vista ahead 53-29 in the fourth quarter.

Emma Fenske led Volcano Vista’s balanced attack with 15 points. Laneah Bryan had 12 and Ashley Williams scored 11.
