The Basha Bears defeated the Chandler Wolves in a conference game last night by a score of 77 to 54. Led by a squad of talented players, the Bears lived up to all the hype as a state championship contending team with one of the best mix of players in Arizona.
Nationally ranked Torren Jones showed up with his arsenal of dunks and inside game which were consistently displayed throughout the entire game. Maurice Kirby made his presence felt on the boards and in the scoring category as well. Kyndal Holmes and Jaron Hopkins were able to get to the rim at will with excellent ball-handling and quick first-step attack moves. The rest of the Bears' players played with little or no deviation from their assigned roles resulting in a very disciplined team on the court. Outside shooting, inside post moves, fast-break transition scoring, rebounding, ball movement and more were on the Bear's menu for the night and they did not hesitate to serve their basketball appetizer, main course and desert to both the Wolves and the large and loud home crowd that was in attendance.
As the season progresses, the scary expectation is that Basha will continue to get even better than what it already is so make plans to get to their games early since standing room only will eventually be the norm for them.
The Chandler Wolves were led by Kisima Jagne and Omar Lee in scoring. Athletically gifted Kisima delivered 19 points for the night and a few show-stopping dunks as a reminder to all that he also is a large presence on the hardwood regardless of the make-up of his opponents. Point guard Omar Lee delivered a well-balanced 12 points and 11 assists. North Carolina transfer, Rakim Johnson, added 10 points in his first Chandler high school varsity game.
The Wolves have a lot of pontential but to compete against the multiple elite programs in Division 5AI basketball they will need to get better transition defense from their starters. They will also need to get their outside shooting game to become a more consistent factor in each outing. To do so will require the best shooters to be in the game longer, warmed-up and in the flow of the game taking more than just a couple of high percentage shots per game.
Tonight, Basha will take their very exciting high-flying game to play against Perry while Chandler hopes to turn around its current 4 game loosing streak as it faces off against top ten ranked Coronal del Sol. Chandler and Basha will meet again on December 13 at Chandler high school.
