THEPOWER OF PINK
Pink has traditionally been a color mixture of red and white. Commonly used for Valentine's Day and Easter, pink is sometimes referred to as "the color of love." It is a soft on the eyes color that has been adopted as the uniform color of the new American Basketball Association Arizona Scorpions who represent Arizona and are based out of Phoenix. But after the opening two games of the Arizona Scorpions season, soft is definitely not the term to use with this high scoring, often dunking and extremely focused attack mentality that this exciting team brought to the Phoenix College hardwood this past weekend.
If you thought the current NBA lock-out positioned professional basketball as a thing of the past, think again. On November 5th and 6th, the Arizona Scorpions brought Arizona lots of love for the fans alongside a professional basketball swagger by defeating the San Diego Surf on Saturday, 130 to 90 and again on Sunday, 118 to 93. The Scorpions are now ranked fourth in the nation in the ABA league.
Both games displayed a high level of play that was a breath of fresh air for basketball enthusiasts hungry for professional basketball. Based on the fast break style of this pink embroidered team, basketball fans should head out to next weekend’s game to witness for themselves a well-coached, and talent filled roster of players who are leaving it all on the hardwood giving fans value that is worth far more than the cost of admission.
In addition to great up tempo basketball, which included highlight dunks equal to, if not greater than “the other league,” the Arizona Scorpions and their pink uniforms also represent a community outreach spirit in the form of creating breast cancer awareness in order to ultimately help raise funds for breast cancer research.
On November 12 and 13 at Phoenix College, the San Diego Sol come into town to face the Arizona Scorpions' talent rich squad whose two-game winning streak and growing fan base is sure to be much bigger as the word gets out about Arizona's new professional basketball team and their exciting style of play.
Even though pink has traditionally been a mixture of red and white, adding the Arizona Scorpions' talented players and their pink uniforms to the mix, surely elevates to another level, the power of pink.
JuniorHoops.com is proud to introduce our enthusiastic basketball community of readers and viewers to memories of the American Basketball Association (ABA) as well as to the basketball league's present state which is one of growth, excitement and great basketball.
For those who are just getting acquainted with the ABA, the original ABA was founded in 1967, competing with the well-established National Basketball Association, until the ABA-NBA merger in 1976.
The ABA distinguished itself from its older counterpart with a more wide-open, flashy style of offensive play, as well as differences in rules (a 30-second shot clock – as opposed to the NBA’s 24-second clock. The ABA did switch to the 24 second shot clock for the 1975-76 season – and use of a three-point field goal arc. Also, the ABA used a colorful red, white and blue ball, instead of the NBA’s traditional orange ball.
The freewheeling style of the ABA eventually caught on with fans. In 1976, its last year of existence, the ABA pioneered the now-popular slam dunk contest at its all-star game in Denver.
Four NBA teams owe their origins to the ABA; New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs. During the course of its existence, the ABA featured dazzling above-the-rim players like Julius (Dr. J") Erving, Connie Hawkins, George ("Ice" Gervin, David Thompson, George McGinnis, Artis Gilmore, Moses Malone, Roger Brown and Dan (the "Horse") Issel.
Each of these electric stars first played professional basketball in the ABA -- with young legs and few limitations. The "frontier spirit" of the ABA also led to a group of memorable characters. The ABA had a coach named "Slick" and players named Whooper, Fatty and Goo. And, who could ever forget Marvin "Bad News" Barnes, "Mr. Excitement" Wendell Ladner, Warren Jabali, and Bage "magnolia Mouth" McCarthy.

Last month, at the Arizona Scorpions contract signing party at Phoenix College, Cedric Ceballos announced that he was coming out of retirement and signing with the Arizona Scorpions of the American Basketball Association (ABA) for their 2011/2012 inaugural season. Ceballos is a 14 year veteran of the NBA and former NBA All-Star and Slam Dunk Contest winner. He played for the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, the Detroit Pistons and the Miami Heat. He is also co-owner of the Scorpions.
In addition, Ceballos announced that he will donate $1 per point he scores to the Susan G. Komen Foundation (http://ww5.komen.org/ ) to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness.
Ceballos says, “I call the reason for my interest in Breast Cancer Awareness the “23 Reasons”. 23 is my number and there are 23 reasons why I am giving back to this cause and they are my mother, daughters, sisters, cousins, family and friends who have been affected by breast cancer in some way or another. I cannot sit on the sidelines of the court or in life and continue to watch while no cure is found. I realize women are surviving this disease, however there is much more that can be done for those who do not have the means to receive treatment, while research for the cure continues. Men are affected by breast cancer as well, but they just don’t speak about it. I have been giving to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for some time now and I thought why not continue it as I lace up my pink Nikes! For every point I score I will donate $1.00 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the team will also be selling pink merchandise to support the cause. It is my hope and prayer that other companies and individuals will come to our games and support me while I have fun playing basketball for a great cause. At some time in life everyone knows someone who knows someone who has been or will be affected by breast cancer. So this is a joint effort.”
“We are very excited to have Cedric come out of retirement to play for the Scorpions, “says Co-owner and Head Coach Ron Tilley. “He is an incredible addition to our already very talented team, which we believe can compete for the ABA Championship.”
