Mesa men’s basketball is continuing to spread their name within the community and is offering a great opportunity for coaches to learn from some local legends. After the successful “Day on Defense” last year and a 2010 Region I Championship, the coaching staff has put together another outstanding clinic.
The “Day on Offense” coaching clinic will be taught by coaching greats Royce Youree and Tom Bennett. The clinic will be Saturday, October 16, 2010 in the Theo Heap Gym on the Mesa campus. It will run from 8 am to 1 pm. For coaches looking to learn from two hall-of-famers, this opportunity cannot be missed.
The clinic will focus on offensive skill development facing the basket and with a player’s back to the basket. Time will be spent on building a transition offense, and principles of man and zone offense.
The Arizona Republic named Coach Youree its “Coach of the Century.” In his time as head coach at East High, 1969-1982, he posted a 301-56 record and was nationally ranked eight times. He coached USA to a gold medal in the 1978 World Junior Games and was a hall-of-fame player at Arizona State.
Tom Bennett spent 19 years leading the Mesa T-Birds, 1976-1994, 1995-1996, and finished with a record of 442-164 and 9 ACCAC Championships. He is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, was voted NJCAA Coach of the Year, and coached Gilbert High School to the 2003 5A State Championship.
The clinic cost breakdown is as follows. One coach is $75, two coaches from the same school are $65 per coach, and three or more coaches from the same school are $50 per coach.
