San Carlos, Arizona is two hours East of Phoenix metro and 20 miles away from Globe, Arizona. On the weekend of September 17 & 18, Native Edge Sports, Tournament Director Timothy Johnson held the second tournament in a series titled “Tim’s Sharpshooter Basketball Tournament Series”.
The name of Sharpshooter was extremely appropriate since the tournament featured teams that brought their 3-point shooting skills to the forefront. I have heard that “Native Ball” is run-n-gun basketball and this tournament was no exception.
The excellent long-range shooting skills displayed at the event were simply jaw-dropping. Every division had teams capable of blowing out many Phoenix metro club teams simply based on the ability to shoot. In addition to the shooting skills, the basketball IQ shown was exemplary. Special mention goes to the women’s division teams who showed a knack for passing the ball that was second to none.
The Men’s division was a competitive arena full of hustle, will to win and downright non-stop running. The boys high school division put on a display of close games where it all culminated in the championship game where the winner barely took the trophy by 5 points.
For those looking to find the next big thing in basketball talent, I say to you to keep your eyes open on the Native basketball with special emphasis on San Carlos, Arizona and Tim Johnson’s Sharpshooter Tournament Series.
The next time you hear that “Rez” ball is Run-n-Gun, you better believe it and be ready to see defense, hustle, passing and teamwork in full display as well.
