Marco Morales (2014, Chandler)
The Arizona Academic Showcase, hosted by ArizonaVarsity.com and SouthwestShowcase.com, took place on Sunday, March 4. 2012.
Attracting some of the top basketball players in Arizona who boast strong performances in both the hardwood and the classroom, the event bubbled to the top Arizona's shooting phenoms in both the 3-point and mid-range shot.
Highlighed by ArizonaVarsity.com Basketball Analyst, Ron Coleman, these players are the basketball snipers to watch throughout Arizona's basketball landscape.
"When good basketball players finish their workouts great basketball shooters are beginning their nightshift shooting routine. It is the extra time invested in the hardwood that makes a great shooter. But before the hard work begins, great shooters first pay close attention in learning the fundamentals of shooting. Although every shooter has their unique style of shooting, all great shooters share the fundamental techniques of shooting upon which they build their own style of shooting. It is a solid foundation in technique that separates the streaky shooter from the consistent solid shooter." RON COLEMAN, ArizonaVarsity.com Basketball Analyst

Four hours before the girl's high school game between Hamilton and Chandler, which is one of Arizona's fiercest high school rivalries, I was not surprised in the least to find Hamilton's Cassidee Ranger diligently working on her shooting.
It was one of the last games of the high school season when most basketball players are thinking about their upcoming club season or relaxing with friends. But not Cassidee Ranger. The three year Varsity player had an intense look on her face and I knew then that the opposing player assigned the arduous task of guarding her was going to have a very hard time trying to stop Cassidee from scoring. I had seen that look before and I could not help but smile later that night when I heard that Cassidee Ranger scored six 3-pointers.
About four years ago, I had walked into the same gym and watched a very young Cassidee playing with the men. I immediately noticed that there was something special about the girl in the pony tails. It was a swagger of confidence. She was not intimidated in the least playing against men. She attacked the basket with eagerness and did not hesitate to shoot the 3-pointer everytime she was left open. When her team won she was quickly ready to play the next game. When her team lost, she was just as quick to let her teammates know where they went wrong and what needed to be done to win the next game. Keep in mind that this was a girl playing in a city gym against men who played hard-nosed basketball.
About two years ago, I was back at the same gym and once again I noticed that Cassidee was on the floor but this time her team was made up of all girls and, like before, she was playing against the men. Her team controlled the gym by winning 4 games straight and Cassidee was just as engaged as when I first saw her play with a leadership on the court that was Napoleonic in nature. There was no doubt on the floor that Cassidee was the straw that stirred the drink that night.
Fast forward to today. In her last year of Varsity high school, Cassidee has become a force to be reckoned with on the hardwood. The college that is lucky to have this basketball player will have laid claim to a basketball prodigy whose 3-point shooting accuracy, passing skills, defensive focus and overall team-player playing style will be an added plus to any collegiate program that has her on the roster. In the words of her Hamilton high school Coach:
"Cassidee is a three-year varsity player that can shoot the ball from the outside and runs the court exceptionally well. She is currently a captain on our team and a strong spot-up shooter that can consistently knock down open jump shots. She is an extremely hard worker that is willing to do anything asked of her. As a freshman Cassidee came off the bench and played limited minutes. She dedicated herself to improving and was on varsity the next year as a sophomore. Cassidee continued to improve each year earning more and more minutes and improving her game to where it is today as one of the top shooters and players in the state of Arizona. I feel Cassidee has not reached her full potential and with her dedication and hard work the sky is the limit. Cassidee is averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals a game this year as a senior. Cassidee is an exceptional shooter. She shoots 38% from the field this year and 33% behind the 3-point line where she made 61 this season. She is one of the hardest working and dedicated players I have ever coached. She spends countless hours in the gym or training on her own to improve her skills. She is a very gifted basketball player with a very high basketball IQ. She has a great work ethic on and off the court and carries a 3.67GPA. Cassidee is one of the elite players that her presence on the team makes everyone around her better. I feel Cassidee is an incredible player that has not reached her full potential and would greatly benefit any college program." - Coach Kain
At the prestigious "All-Arizona Showcase" held in 2011, it was written about her that:
"This guard can really shoot the ball. Her 3 point shooting at the All Arizona Showcase was second to none. She shot so well that she earned the nickname "buckets" or BUCKETZZZZZ! by a show case coach for her ability to score from the perimeter and hit five threes in one quarter and 2 more in the second a total of seven. The coach from the opposing team walked out of the gym after the fifth consecutive three point shot in the first quarter and let his assistant coach, coach the rest of the half as he yelled at his team 'can't anyone guard that girl' and waked off. after the game an NBA player came up to here parents and said that Ranger was amazing to watch even as a retired NBA player. Ranger is also physical in the paint on both offense and defense and confidence is definitely there". - Ron Coleman
Intersport, a sports marketing company that operates the 2012 American Family Insurance National High School Slam Dunk & 3-point Championships, which will air on CBS on Sunday, April 1, 2012, has invited Cassidee to participate in this event and the invitation is indicative of the fame that is now following Cassidee's game.
At the end of the day, hustle, determination, shooting accuracy, basketball IQ and the epitomy of being a teamplayer is what comes to mind when one sees Cassidee's game. Something tells me that soon there will be more than just the local city gyms and high school basketball for Cassidee. Soon we will see that determined look on a lasger stage as Cassidee Ranger sets her eyes on the college level where her Varsity years and All Arizona Showcase performances clearly indicate is where she will continue to shine.

Demarquise Johnson, a 6-foot-6, 185-pound senior from Arizona's Westwind Prep decided to take his game to the PAC-12 Conference and play for Washington State and head coach Ken Bone.
Johnson led Westwind Prep Academy to the 2011 2A State championship last season. He has returned to the program as a post-graduate this season.
According to the Arizona Preps Scouting Report: "Demarquaise handles the basketball very well in the open floor, shoots long range, can create his own shot, and plays with very good body control. Also a good finisher in transition, a highlight reel dunker and a slasher in traffic. Has good defensive skills with the ability to block and change shots. Solid rebounder but can be better in this area."

Tucson Amphitheater High School's 6-foot-4, 185-pound senior guard/forward Tim Derksen announced his college decision to accept a college scholarship from the University of San Francico and Head Coach Rex Walters. According to the Arizona Preps' Scouting Report, Derksen is strong at making plays around the basket area, and also finishes plays while slashing to the basket or in transition. Possesses a good shot with range and is his best when scoring off the dribble. A good defender and shotblocker with very good ball handling skills thus allowing him to play both guard positions on the floor.

2011 All Arizona Showcase Event Analysis
On October 15 & 16 the American Sports Center, a $7.8 million indoor sports center facility in Avondale, was host to the 2011 All Arizona Showcase presented by Southwest Showcase & ArizonaVarsity.com.
The event attracted a major portion of Arizona's elite youth basketball players. The format displayed multiple divisions that included a high school team division, an individual boys division, a senior to senior game and a girls division.
During the first day of competition, the individual boys division was divided into a mainly high school Juniors/Seniors division although a few higher skilled sophomores were invited to play with the upperclassmen. During the second day, all grades were mixed in teams and a highlight-full game took place between the seniors at the event.
Both the high school teams' division and the girls division showed very competitive games. It was nice to see a venue where the high school teams could come out to gauge their play against other schools and just as nice was the girls division which displayed girls who can downright play ball.
Overall, the event was executed as promised although many were disappointed that the exciting dunk contest and 3-point shooting contest of last year did not take place this year even though it was advertised as a main exhibition. We hope to see this event take place next year since both competitions are highly anticipated by the public.
Regardless of the "hiccup" in not having the dunk and 3-point contest, the showcase did deliver on attracting highly skilled youth basketball players. Many participants were attracted to the event by the promise of being highlighted and placed into the event's database which is advertised as being positioned before college coaches. We did see a few players having their pictures taken and evaluators appeared to be taking notes in the sidelines.
With the high number of elite basketball players that were present and the high level of play that we witnessed, it should not be a problem for the public to see articles and photos of the kids who showed up to showcase their wares.
As the Arizona basketball community continues to grow with talent and fans, we hope to see more of these showcases become more of a norm rather than the exception. So far the months of September and October have included quite a few showcases thoughout the metro phoenix area indicating that the demand is there with talent and interest on the upswing.
JuniorHoops.com 2011 Upperclassman All Arizona Showcase MVP
Camyn Boone | Mountain View | Senior | The Grand Canyon University bound Camyn Boone displayed an all-around game that was a joy to watch. We lost count of the scored points but suffice it to say that the scoring included layups, midrange jumpers, 3's, floaters and dunks. The only thing that we did not see was a hook shot which we would not have been surprised if he showed that too. Block shots, assists, defense were not left behind either.
Impressive is the word for this player who is being unofficially christened as "Blake Griffin Jr" with his ability to quickly jump off the hardwood and his exclamation mark dunks. He even has a slight resemblace to the NBA star. Folks, Grand Canyon University stole this player from the big D1 schools.
Definitely one to watch.
JuniorHoops.com 2011 Underclassman All Arizona Showcase MVP
Marco Morales | Chandler High School | Sophomore | Backed up his developing reputation of being a shooting phenom with 14 3-pointers in 4 games....against upperclassmen. Very poised and mature in his overall game. Likes to share the ball. In one game, he had six 3-pointers.
Can't deny his ability to put the ball in the hole from both beyond the arc and in transition. Adding fastbreak layups to include an "And1" to the mix, he scored an overall 51 points in 4 games whose format was a 5 minute rotation cycle and running clock. Had he played more than just half the game with a stop clock the numbers would have been even higher.
Defense was strong against upperclassmen. Another one to watch. His stats are hard to refute.

5. Marco Morales | Chandler High School | Backed up his developing reputation of being a shooting phenom with 14 3-pointers in 4 games....against upperclassmen. Very poised and mature in his overall game. Likes to share the ball.
6. Jordan Shipp | Prescott High School | Tall, athletic, developing skills and extremely coachable but was tentative. A great teamplayer.
7. Tim Johnson | San Carlos High School | Good shooter yet was tentative in consistently shooting the ball. Has paint penetration skills. Will need to be more aggressive in showing his skills and needs a quicker release on his shot. Can be dangerous from the outside when hot.

Player Profile
Khari Holloway
Class of 2013
I have been coaching, developing and evaluating basketball players for many years. Throughout this period, I have seen many players come and go but when it comes to conjuring up a player that stands out as the most focused player on the court, Khari Holloway comes up immediately. This pointguard is fearless, focused, determined and has sharp claws.....a deadly combination.
Khari Holloway is a 6’2”, 187lbs, 17 year old junior playing for the True Ballerz club basketball team and for the Mountain Pointe High School varsity team. As a freshman, he played junior varsity and saw varsity action in one game. During his 2010-11 high school sophomore season, he played on the varsity team and averaged per game: 8.3 points, 4.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals. He was the third highest scorer on the varsity squad pouring in 233 points to the overall team’s stats.
As a sophomore point guard, the numbers speak volumes of this determined young baller, but it is not enough to just point out the evidence in the numbers. There is something unique about Khari and that something can easily be found by simply viewing his confident, poised and serious overall game where the real action takes place……on the court.
If you are looking to see a player smiling, laughing and enjoying the game, you will not find that in Khari. Don’t get me wrong, young Holloway truly enjoys the game of basketball but one can’t help but to compare Khari’s game to a cat playing with a mouse knowing all along that the mouse has only a short time to think that escape is even possible. Such is the case with Khari’s game. He will pass the ball appropriately to his teammates, play tenacious defense at all times and follow coaching directions to the letter of the coach’s law, but when the coach gives Khari the green light to take over the game, Khari will eagerly show his opponents that he has claws….sharp ones.
What one sees in this up and coming Arizona gem of a player is a well-rounded game that has very little weaknesses. If one had to mention a weakness it would be that he is still developing his free-throw accuracy beyond the current 75% average. His current 36% field-goal, 39% 2-point, and 31% 3-point season average is respectable and will only continue to get better over the next two seasons. Youth is on his side and that is scary….for his opponents.
Another stand-out characteristic is Khari’s determined routes straight at the basket. It does not matter if his defender is all-state in defense or if the paint has 6’10” centers with firmly planted roots in the hard floor, Khari will attack anything and anyone that is in his way and the normal result will end up being an “And1” highlight or a sleight of hand pass to an open teammate under the rim.
There are multiple claws in the paws of a cat, but watching Khari Holloway play with such fearlessness, focus and determination makes one think of a cool cat with more claws than usual because there are certainly a multiple number of ways that this up an coming hoops star can hurt you on the hardwood.
