Tucson, AZ - The Inaugural Tucson Spring Basketball Showcase was held on Saturday April 30, 2011 at Catalina High School in Tucson, AZ. 26 teams and 397 players participated in this one day event in front of several scouts and junior college coaches. Several players deserved to be added to the “Spotlight” because of their good character and performance level of play on the court. Character means a lot for players whenever they step on the court, not only do they represent their team, they represent themselves. This means everything when a scout like me evaluates a player and his performance. Attitude and they way a prospect delivers tells it all. Bottom line is to play hard and keep a good head on your shoulders because you never know who is watching. Coaches and parents please remind yourself that the game is for the kids on the court and you’re their role models and they feed off your positive or negative energy. Let’s take a look at the following prospects that showed well in their two games and earned the “Spotlight” list, in height order.
Austin Miller 5-9 PG 2014 Catalina Foothills
One player that finds a way to get things done on the floor is Miller. Showed his nice pull up jumper and a mid range floater. Miller defends well and plays both ends and has been consistent on the floor with his leadership. Miller is the son of The University of Arizona head basketball coach Sean Miller.
Greg Carter 5-10 PG 2012 Desert Vista
Carter can push the ball and make plays. Must maintain under control and has ability to score in transition and make few mistakes. Need to see him more but he is one of the top pure pg’s in the state.
Kendrick Little 5-10 PG 2013 Buena (Sierra Viata)
Gave his heart out in both games, little can really use his speed to his advantage and knows how to play.
Isaiah Lopez 5-11 PG 2013 Agua Fria
Lopez is the floor general and today displayed why with his no look passes and ability to make smart plays. Lopez has upside and is a solid division I prospect and is one to watch for 2013.
Diquan Hubbard 6-0 G 2013 Dysart
Knows how to score and get his shot off. Defended well and knows how to get open looks.
Lester Medford 6-0 PG 2011 Amphi
Medford played to earn the top performer of the day. Medford was unstoppable and can do it all for his team, Medford is highly being recruited by several Junior Colleges and head coaches like Jerry Carrillo (Cochise) and Charles Harral (Arizona Western) showed there interest being courtside for his games.
Frank MgBoli 6-1 PG 2011 St Gregory
Does it all on the floor and has leadership, solid student of the game and is worth a division II scholarship.
Austin Nelms 6-1 G 2014 Catalina Foothills
Nelms is a good shooter and in both games showed his scoring ability and has a chance. Nelms can also finish in transition. Carries a 3.9 grade point average.
Joe Monreal 6-1 SG 2012 Nogales
Monreal is showing that he can score; most are open looks as his jump shot is very consistent. Monreal has a motor and provides good leadership on the floor. Look for a good summer from him.
Xavier Stephens 6-2 SG 2012 Glendale
Has good size for a shooting guard but must work on his ball handling. Stephens is an aggressive player who plays tough on both ends of the floor. Showed out well in both games today.
Michael Barry 6-2 SG 2012 Agua Fria
Barry plays like a poor mans Mark Price. Barry is known to catch and shoot, but learning how to create better off the dribble. In both games made his case as being a top scorer in the state as he averaged over 20 points per game last season.
Chaz Mack 6-4 SF 2014 Catalina Foothills
There is one player that brings it every time on the floor and it’s Mack. Mack is a solid prospect that plays multiple positions on the floor. Has good upside.
Mike Norton 6-4 SG 2013 Hope International
Norton has good offensive skills and in long in length. One to watch and plays hard.
Sean Soelter 6-4 SF 2012 Salpointe Catholic
Good shooter and defender, has good size and has a chance.
Franky Teran 6-4 SG 2011 Pueblo
Teran is a very active player on the floor. Showed he can handle decent for his size and likes to attack the basket in transition. One to watch and is a solid JUCO prospect.
Jacobo Monteverde 6-4 SF 2012 Catalina Foohills
In both games showed his ball handling skills and nice shooting touch. Monteverde has good size to post up the guards or play in the post with his wide body frame. His weight is like 245 and uses it to his advantage and rebounds with anyone. Has great upside and understands his role on the floor.
John Makkar 6-5 F 2011 Agua Fria
Makkar caught every scout’s eye because he plays 6 foot 9. Makkar rebounds well and is a solid shot blocker. A bit undersized but will elevate at the next level because of understanding how to play. Look for Makkar to earn a scholarship to play Division II or JUCO ball somewhere in the fall.
Isaac Vogan 6-6 F 2012 Agua Fria
Nice rebounding skills and runs the floor well. Has good size and uses it well on offense in the post.
Andre Shumpert 6-7 SF 2013 Santa Rita
Shump can really block shots and is in shape. Only weighs 160 but likes to bang. Must continue to work on his face up game and get consistent in ball handling.
Talbott Denny 6-7 SF 2012 Salpointe Catholic (Tucson)
Denny is a game changer and plays hard on both ends of the floor. Denny is developing into a solid wing that is very unselfish and can finish in the paint. Played well today in both games.
Jeremiah April 6-10 SF 2013 Joy Christian
A must see prospect in the 2013 class. April runs the floor well for a big and can pass in the post. Plays well in the half court game on defense and blocks shots well. April has showed why in both games he is a division I prospect and could be one of the top post prospects in the country very soon. Has a nice jump hook and can shoot the mid range jumper.
